15 Years of Achievement Through Mentoring
Need-based mentoring program bolsters NHS students to help set them up for success in high school and beyond
NEEDHAM, MA- MARCH 13, 2018 -- Needham Steps Up (NSU), a mentoring program for eligible students within Needham High School, is set to celebrate 15 Years of Achievement Through Mentoring at their annual reception and charity auction on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. The purpose of this event is to raise community awareness of the power of mentoring relationships and to celebrate the great strides NSU has made pairing eligible Needham High School students with experienced mentors for the past 15 years.

NSU was established in 2003 to help students overcome barriers that were preventing them from accessing the full Needham High School educational experience. Through this program, students are paired with trained faculty and staff members to help them access the vital resources they need to navigate high school successfully.
“My mentor made a huge difference,” said a program graduate who wishes to remain anonymous. “I don’t think I would have been as open-minded about pretty much everything – about myself, broadening my horizons and taking new risks.”
Since its inception, NSU has helped dozens of eligible students graduate from Needham High School and go on to attend college or find other post-secondary success. NSU has collaborated with families, students and the high school to build one-to-one mentoring relationships to help students set goals, stay on track, self-advocate, and develop critical skills required for graduation and post-secondary achievement.
Needham Steps Up is a key thread in the fabric we’ve woven together to support all of our students,” said Aaron Sicotte, NHS Principal. “We have found that these mentor relationships build the students’ self esteem, boost their confidence and promote academic success,” continued Sicotte. “NSU is a great example of the community’s commitment to the schools in Needham and to providing equal opportunity and access for each one of our students.”
In addition to one-to-one mentoring, Needham Steps Up provides enrichment grants, exposure to life skills practices, college application assistance, post-graduation planning, and more.
NSU is almost entirely supported through private donations and will hold their annual fundraiser reception and charity auction to celebrate 15 Years of Achievement Through Mentoring on Tuesday, April 23rd at Knight Auditorium, Babson College from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Please consider joining them for an exciting evening of hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer. For tickets, information, or to donate, visit www.needhamstepsup.org or our Facebook page.

“As Needham becomes more affluent, I believe it is more important than ever to make certain that no students are leaving Needham, both the community and the high school, with a sense of disconnectedness. All young people are entitled to explore the world around them and their inner selves. This is why I value mentoring; perhaps I can guide a student toward discovery and a sense of purpose.”
